The Laurel is a 583,000-square-foot, mixed-use residential tower in the heart of Philadelphia's iconic Rittenhouse Square. As the tallest residential building in the city, it redefines the skyline and sets a new benchmark for luxury living. The building features 66 condominium units, known as The Laurel, 184 luxury apartments, known as 1909 Rittenhouse, and 44,000 square feet of ground-floor retail fronting Walnut, Sansom, and 20th streets.

SCB’s design is architecturally forward-thinking while being contextually respectful of the neighborhood’s beauty, character, and identity. The design team drew inspiration from the area’s distinct architectural details, such as cobblestone streets, historic fountains, tree-lined sidewalks, church steeples, and masonry-clad rowhouses.

The design framework centers on the building’s function, materiality, and form. Along Walnut Street, the refined base echoes the stonework of the adjacent rowhouses. A grand iron-and-glass canopy defines the main entry for condominium residents, while a separate, equally distinguished entrance offers apartment residents the prestige of a Walnut Street address. Throughout the building, visual connections to Rittenhouse Square are thoughtfully integrated from interior amenity spaces on levels 4 and 27 to private outdoor terraces in select residences.

As the structure rises, it steps back twice before culminating into a sculpted crown that features sophisticated evening lighting. More than a decorative element, the crown pays homage to Philadelphia’s tradition of distinctive building tops, signage, and illuminated landmarks.

The Laurel redefines luxury living in Philadelphia while contributing meaningfully to the architectural fabric of Rittenhouse Square. SCB’s design is a testament to the power of design, blending timeless elegance with contemporary living at one of the city’s most iconic addresses.
