United Polaris Lounge
The newly expanded United Polaris Lounge at ORD introduces a refined vision of quiet luxury tailored to the international business-class traveler. Reopened in May 2025, the lounge is 50% larger, offering seating for up to 350 passengers and a broadened array of hospitality options.
While the entry retains its original footprint, new spa-inspired lighting and playful accents set a calming tone. The lounge unfolds into a series of inviting zones, where guests can move through the space to find expanded seating and a reimagined primary bar that offers a seamless blend of comfort and contemporary style.
Beyond the original lounge, the new addition opens into a spacious, light-filled retreat framed by expansive windows offering panoramic views of the airfield. This airy setting features a mix of recliners and sofa-style seating, perfect for guests who are ready to unwind. Lighting remains intentionally understated, allowing natural daylight and the ever-changing tarmac views to set the mood.
Past this space, a second bar reveals itself like a hidden gem, evoking the intimacy and elegance of a modern speakeasy. A private dining room, featuring a la carte, upscale dining options, completes the experience.
The design focuses on elevated comfort and layered privacy, with architectural elements like textured glazing and drapery to subtly define zones throughout the space. A timeless material palette includes walnut veneer, Pietra gray stone, oil-rubbed bronze, and natural marble to add richness and durability. These finishes were chosen for their understated elegance and tactile appeal.
A curated color palette of rich neutrals is punctuated by United’s signature dark blue with deep plum accents that pair beautifully with the warm walnut wood tones. Together, these elements establish a relaxed, contemporary atmosphere that is perfectly aligned with the expectations of today’s global traveler.
SCB’s design for the expanded Polaris Lounge responds to United’s vision to reimagine the luxury travel experience. The project is not simply about enlarging the club’s footprint or designing a beautiful space; it redefines the airport environment. Today’s travelers seek calm, clarity, and a sense of control amidst the unpredictability of air travel. They value privacy without isolation, and moments that help them feel grounded, even while crossing time zones. SCB’s approach was both strategic and aesthetic, crafting a space that balances elegance with intention. The design introduces moments of respite, intuitive spatial flow, and layered hospitality experiences, creating an environment that reflects the evolution of the Polaris brand and reinforces United’s commitment to the premium travel experience.
