We Are SCB
Lacey Aley
How long have you been at SCB?
1 year.
How did you end up at SCB?
As I was looking for a job last winter after decided to move from Portland, OR to Chicago, I came across an opening to work on the O’Hare project as part of SCB. I didn’t know anything about the project but the idea of working on one of the busiest airports in the world intrigued me. Applying for the position is one of the best career choices I have made.
What initially attracted you to study design or pursue a career in design?
When I was 15, I visited Chicago for the first time and decided that I wanted to be responsible for changing cityscapes. I fell in love with the city canyons and public transportation that weaved in and out of the city. Over a decade later; I am very proud to say that I am in Architect living and working in Chicago.
What is the most interesting thing you have worked on in the past couple of weeks?
I currently lead one of the projects that support the OHare Global Terminal becoming a reality. I am learning a lot about the complexity of programming an airport with all the different stakeholders and building systems that come into play.
What does a typical day look like for you?
I don’t really have a typical day since my project is moving fast. I like to get in before most of my team so that I have some time to myself to focus on what needs to happen that day. I split my time between meetings, working one on one with my team members, and some heads down time to work through my own tasks. My favorite days are when we get to collaborate in person to solve a challenging problem.
What is the best professional advice you have ever received?
Get comfortable with being uncomfortable. I don’t remember who said this to me, but I have found that I grow the most professionally and personally when I’m working on a project or task that puts me out of my comfort zone. I jump at opportunities even when I am unsure if I’m 100% ready for them.
