We Are SCB
Joseph King
What initially attracted you to study design or pursue a career in design?
A large public university allows the opportunity to explore several majors and interests early on. I tried a ton, and architecture/design resonated so much more than everything else.
What projects are you currently working on?
A few mixed-use towers, including 30 Van Ness, an office/residential high-rise in San Francisco.
What is the most interesting thing you have worked on in the past couple of weeks?
Design and coordination of the exterior wall package of a large scale project, working with the SCB team, consultants, GC and design assist partners to integrate different systems into a coherent whole.
What is the best thing about working at SCB?
The collaborative nature of the firm and being able to rely on the knowledge and expertise of our team, which I greatly appreciate.
What does a typical day look like for you?
This year, typical days involve conference calls with one or two hour respites to get other things done. Once the work day ends, a solid block of time to catch up!
What advice can you give to young or future designers and planners?
Through teaching studio and acting as a visiting reviewer at several programs, my advice would be to learn and soak in all you can wherever you are. Architecture has many paths to offer and many more are revealed every day. Find your passion and trust in your abilities!
