We Are SCB

Upasana Patel

How long have you been at SCB?

2 years.

How did you end up at SCB?

I’d always desired to live in a city bustling with history, culture, quality education, sports events and it was a dream to work in a design firm. My goals aligned with the Boston office as it also had recently moved to the city. The firm acknowledged my interests and has given me the platform to explore my abilities.

What initially attracted you to study design or pursue a career in design?

Since childhood, I have been a very keen observer and a creative; always designing ways to use discarded items to make something new. I was also an athlete, which helped me in developing focus and dedication to achieve end results. In 10th grade, I painted all my bedroom walls with different forms of artwork. After leaving these and many other clues for my parents, they were pretty sure about a career in architecture for me. I still remember how I used to experiment to be the odd one out. The process itself transformed me. Now I try to find design solutions wherever I go and have my own set of values and perspectives on seeing the world.

What is the best thing about working at SCB?

Taking public transportation, feeling all happy while walking across the bridge everyday with strangers to the office. It’s like a perfect movie scene! I also like getting to know the whole team here at SCB and about the projects they are working on. I like to ask lots of questions. The people themselves are inspiring and helping me to grow.

What is the most important thing you have learned in your career?

Sometimes you have to accept your hard days, flaws, and bad decisions, and at the same time, learn from your past. Communicate and ask questions. Learn from your coworkers and teach them too. Your work and attitude towards handling every situation sets you apart from the rest. Learn to focus on finding solutions. Try each option. Your career isn’t a race that you have to finish. Rather it’s a dot that will keep moving forward…
