Originally constructed in 1965 as the Illinois Bell Telephone Company headquarters in Chicago’s West Loop, SCB led the repositioning as both interior Architect and Core and Shell Designer in collaboration with design partner Ste Marie.

A designated Landmark, the project required a careful balance between modernization and the preservation of its historic character. A major focus was placed on expanding and elevating amenities to attract a diverse range of users.

SCB’s dual role ensured a cohesive vision across the new amenity levels on Floors 30 to 32. An integrated design process enabled significant spatial and programmatic modifications, including revamped circulation and enlarged amenity spaces. Before the repositioning, Level 30 was the highest occupied floor. To expand the tenant offerings, SCB repurposed an underutilized mechanical floor on Level 31, removing the outdated infrastructure to reveal generous ceiling heights and open volumes that are ideal for a vibrant, hospitality-inspired environment.

The newly constructed Level 32 introduces indoor and outdoor spaces with sweeping city views. A monumental marble stair, accented with recessed lighting, connects nearly 60,000 square feet of wellness, dining, social, and conferencing areas across the three levels.

The Bell’s new program includes two redesigned outdoor plazas, a bar and restaurant with outdoor dining, a spa and fitness center, pickleball courts, game and lounge areas, flexible conferencing, and multiple terraces. Situated near major transit, offices, and cultural destinations, The Bell is LEED Gold and targeting WELL certification, reflecting a commitment to sustainability and well-being.
