Intermediate Designer – Campus Environments

SCB is seeking an experienced  Intermediate Designer to join our Campus Environments practice group in San Francisco.

For over three decades, SCB’s Campus Environments practice group has been shaping the future of higher education through thoughtful, high-impact design. With work on more than 65 campuses across the country, we bring deep expertise to projects including student housing, student centers, dining halls, recreation and wellness facilities, academic and research spaces, and libraries, among others. The breadth of our experience allows us to deliver integrated, functional, and inspiring environments that support every aspect of the student experience and enrich a campus community.

As an Intermediate Designer in the Campus Environments practice group, you will work on projects across all scales and campus building typologies, with particular focus on projects on the west coast. We are looking for an individual who has experience working with institutions of higher education, a passion for campus design, and a desire for professional growth.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Working in collaboration with the Principal-in-Charge, responsible for the formulation of the project design philosophy and adhering to this philosophy in the execution of the work and in delegation of assignments to junior staff. 
  • Leading client design presentations and working closely with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Effectively prioritizing and fluidly transitioning between multiple concurrent projects at various stages of design.
  • Reviewing the design for conformity to applicable zoning and / or development parameters.
  • Throughout all stages of the project, reviewing the drawing production for conformance to the design concept.
  • Selecting exterior and interior finishes, fixtures, colors and materials.
  • During construction, responding to questions about design intent and reviewing/approving material sample submittals and finishes.
  • When required by the local jurisdiction, participating in presentations and/or hearings to present the project. Directing the preparation of any filing documents or exhibits required by the local jurisdiction.
  • Giving and soliciting feedback from other designers in order to continually raise the bar for quality of design work.
  • Participating in strategic discussion with senior management on issues that affect the Firm’s performance, perception in the marketplace, client satisfaction and profitability.
  • Researching and promoting opportunities for new or innovative system applications. Actively looking for and implementing techniques to improve quality of work and efficiency.
  • Promoting a positive team environment with cooperative and interactive working methods and setting a high example of professionalism and leadership for junior staff

Qualifications and Experience

  • Accredited professional degree in architecture
  • Between 6 to 12 years of post-graduate working experience in the architectural profession
  • Proficient in Revit and AutoCAD programs. Familiarity with software programs such as Enscape, SketchUp, Rhino, Grasshopper, 3D Studio Max, and Adobe Creative Suite
  • Demonstrated passion for design, a pulse on emerging trends, and a developed point of view about your work.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with the capability to influence design outcomes.
  • Acute attention to detail and aesthetic sensibility.
  • Enthusiasm for utilizing a diverse set of approaches to creative problem solving.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a dynamic, hands-on, creative environment
  • Basic technical knowledge of local zoning ordinances, building codes, material assemblies, building systems, and engineering concepts.
  • Ability to take charge and respectfully direct younger staff at all project stages
  • Prior experience in academic facilities a plus but not required.

  • Salary: $90,000 – $135,000 commensurate with experience
