For the relocation of their Chicago office, Michael Best & Friedrich selected SCB to design 26,000 square feet of space in one of Chicago’s premier new office towers at River Point. The overall design concept was centered on creating a modern and sophisticated work environment that supports Michael Best’s recognition as a top-tier, progressive law firm in the Chicago marketplace.
Michael Best’s brand and core values are focused on its people, clients, and the communities in which they work, inspiring SCB to integrate these key principles into the design of the new space. A culture wall anchors the reception area and celebrates the staff, acknowledging each person’s value and contribution to the firm. Reinforcing the hospitable and approachable nature of Michael Best, guests and staff are encouraged to help themselves at the coffee bar in the open reception, making clients and guests feel welcome from the moment they enter the office. Vibrant artwork created by local artists is displayed throughout the office, representing Michael Best’s involvement and investment in the surrounding community.
The SCB team selected the timeless, wood-toned palette to add warmth to the space while contemporary fixtures and clean lines offer a modern complement.
SCB’s design fosters a collaborative and team-oriented environment. A multi-purpose room, better known as the “Best Café,” is used as both a break room and informal meeting space. Offering a more relaxed and casual atmosphere, the Best Café serves as a gathering space for all-hands meetings and invites daily use through its Fresh Market food offerings. This move presented Michael Best with an opportunity to revisit their organizational culture in a variety of ways. Most significantly, SCB helped the firm establish new space guidelines by adopting a universal-sized office standard. Fully-glazed private offices along the perimeter maximize exterior views and allow for abundant daylighting to the office interior, reinforcing the firm’s values and forward-thinking approach.
