A Monumental New Entry Point to Chicago O’Hare International Airport
The Terminal 5 Parking Garage at Chicago O’Hare International Airport has officially opened to the public. We celebrated this significant accomplishment at the ribbon-cutting ceremony with the Chicago Department of Aviation Commissioner Jamie Rhee, the larger Chicago Department of Aviation team, and our project partners. SCB was the Design Architect and Architect of Record, working in collaboration with STL Architects as the Associate Architect.
The SCB team was led by Design Principal Martin Wolf, FAIA. “We are thrilled to realize this important next step in the transformative O’Hare 21 program,” he says. “This work is the result of a talented, diverse team who worked hand-in-hand with the City of Chicago to meet the ambitious goals set by the City and the Airlines at the beginning of this project.”
Architecturally, the design celebrates the garage’s prominent position at the front door of one of the world’s busiest airports. The outside of the building is clad with a geometric pattern of metal panels, creating a visually impactful, unified sculptural form and a monumental new entry point to Chicago O’Hare International Airport.
The SCB team prioritized the parking experience to enhance passenger convenience. The parking structure optimizes user access to the terminal, utilizing helical speed ramps and real-time electronic signage to streamline vehicle movement. A remote curbfront on the second level substantially expands the passenger drop-off and pick-up area and reduces congestion.
The new Terminal 5 Parking Garage more than doubles the number of parking spaces available, leaving a lasting impact on the passengers who travel in and out each day. This work builds on SCB’s commitment to elevating passenger experience and meeting the strategic needs of world-class airports.
